William JONES 1848-1921

William Jones was born about 1848 in Wrexham. In 1870 he married in Wrexham to Sarah Ann Dawe who was born in 1846 in Sheppey, Maidstone, Kent and was the daughter of Richard Dawe and Sarah Wright.

Her father was a seaman on the HMS Campertown when he married Sarah Wright, as was his father George. Sarah Wright’s father – Philip was also a sailor. How Sarah Ann Dawe came to meet William Jones is quite a mystery.

William and Sarah moved to Penybont where William was a brewer’s labourer, they had a son Stephen born in late 1870. They moved to Liverpool for a while before returning to Wrexham where Sarah started working for herself as a shirt maker, William was a general labourer. By this time they had three daughters, Sarah, Martha and Edith. Martha died in 1905 at Holt Street Buildings.

After living in several places in Wrexham they ended up in Bleak House, 16 Abbot Street by 1911, when Sarah was a dressmaker, still on her own account, her daughters Sarah and Edith were both milliners.

They remained there for many years and William died there in 1921 aged 78.

Sarah died in St Austell, Chester Road in 1929 and was buried with her daughter and husband.
