Thomas GOULDING 1885-1950 – Erddig Groom

by Jill Burton.

Thomas was born at Bryn Mally in 1885, the 9th child of John and Jane Goulding who had 11 children.

In 1891 John was Coachman to Thomas Clayton of Bryn Mally Hall, Pentre Broughton and the family were living at Bryn Mally Lodge.

But Thomas’s father died in the 1890s and by 1901 his widowed mother Jane was living with 5 of the children at 7 Earle Street, Wrexham

Thomas age 16 was a groom, although living with his widowed mother. Earle Street is off Erddig Road, so it is likely he began work as a Stable boy at Erddig.

Thomas Goulding (10 Earle St Wxm)

On 1906 Erddig wage sheets he was earning 1/8d a day for 6 days a week which is 10 shillings a week and working for Erddig coachman John Jones.

He would have first met Edith Maria Fairman, known as Edie, when she came to visit her sister Jinnie, housemaid at Erddig, in the summer of 1906. Edie came back to work at Erddig as 3rd Laundry maid from January 1907.

Thomas and Edith married in Wrexham at the end of 1907.

Philip and Louisa Yorke gave them a wedding present of a wall clock which they always kept.

But soon after Thomas left Erddig. By 1911 Thomas and Edith were living at 13, Empress Road, Wrexham with their son John age 2. Thomas was working as a coachman for an undertaker.

Thomas later opened a boot and shoe repair shop in Penybryn, Wrexham  and he and Edie moved to 10 Earle Street.

Son Robert was born in 1920.

Thomas died in 1950 age 66. He was buried in Wrexham Cemetery on 19th July 1950 in grave R-04751.
