JONES, John Alfred – Gresford War Memorial

Written and researched by mavis williams

I cannot find any trace of John Alfred or his mother Mary A in Gresford on any census, although on Ancestry – John Alfred Jones in the UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919, tells us that he was born in Gresford and also enlisted there, his Regimental Number makes me suspect that he was in the Territorial Force and ready to go out first as he was in the thick of the fighting in November 1914 according to his Medal Card and sadly died a few short months later.   This source also tells us that he died of wounds.

The first of the UK, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, 1901-1929, Record No. – 178243 for John Alfred has his details crossed out!!!!!

However there is another one – Record No. 179751 which tells us that the sole Legatee was his mother Mary A. who received £5 14s 1d on the 23rd July 1915 and his War Gratuity of £3 on the 28th June 1919.

John A Jones in the British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 tells us that he was awarded the Victory & British War Medals and the 14 Star .   No Theatre of War was stated but his entry into the battlefield was the 6th November 1914.   He Died of Wounds 2nd February 1915

Nothing else written on the card

Any help would be gratefully received.
