
JAMES PHOENIX 1815 – 1905
MARY ANN PHOENIX 1819 – 1889
James was born 20 November 1815 at Gresford, he is thought to be the son of James Phoenix, a schoolmaster and Hannah Morris.
In 1839 he married Mary Ann Owens at Wrexham. Mary Ann had been born 16 April 1819 in Manchester.
By 1851 they were living at Pentwmpath, Llay. James was a carpenter and they had 7 children, John 11, James 10, Margaret 7, Joseph 5, Hannah 4, George 2 and Alfred aged 2 months.
By 1861 the family moved to Chester Road in Wrexham, James now had his own business and was employing 3 men. They had more children -Mary 8, Emily 6, Jane 3 and George aged 6, (first George had died) another son Herbert was born in 1862.
Their son James died aged 30 in November 1871 aged 30 and George died in October 1877 aged 17, both are buried in Gresford.
In 1888 James was still in Chester Street, but had his business based at the Railway Wharf in Rhosddu, by now he was a coal merchant as well as a wheelwright. The family moved to Holt Street where their daughter Mary died in October 1883 aged 30 and was buried in Wrexham. Mary Ann died in February 1889. By 1901 only James and Emily were in Holt Street and James died there on 30 November 1905. Their son Herbert Edward died in January 1925 and was buried with his parents and his brother.
