GIBSON, Walter – Gresford War Memorial

Written and Researched by Mavis Williams

Walter Gibson first appears on the 1891 census living at Parkside, Allington, Denbighshire with his grand parents, William, a Farm Labourer, & Jane Gibson, age 70 and 71 respectively.     Also in the household was their daughter Margaret, Single and age 34, daughter Elizabeth, single, 32 and a Laundress.   3 grandchildren were also there, but I don’t know if they were siblings or cousins.   Edith, 8, Frank, 5 and Walter age 2.   All the family had been born in Allington.

The 1901 census sees daughter Margaret, age 43 and still unmarried living at Hillock Lane, Gresford, with 3 nephews, Samuel, Single 24 and a Platelayer on the Railway.   Frank, 16 was a Blacksmith’s Apprentice  and Walter was age 13.

The 1911 census shows that the family had not moved, still at Hillock Lane, but there was only Margaret, 54 and Walter, 22 single and a General Labourer.

I have been unable to unravel who the mother of Walter and the other nephews was that are shown above.

Walter Gibson in the UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 tells us that he was born and resided in Gresford, and enlisted in Wrexham, also confirms his Regimental details

Walter Gibson in the UK, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, 1901-1929 tells us that the sole Legatee was his Aunt Margaret who was paid £17 13s on the 28th February 1919 and his War Gratuity of £15 10s on the 28th November 1919.

Walter Gibson in the British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 tells us that he was awarded the Victory & British War Medals  and the 15 Star.   It also tells us that his firast Thaetre of War was France and he entered it on the 5th December 1915 and was killed in Action on the 6th September 1918, this also gives his Regiment or Corps:       The Royal Welsh (Welch) Fusiliers

Regimental Number: 25827.

Any help unravelling young Walter’s life and of his possible siblings or cousins would be gratefully received as his story needs to be told and be remembered for his sacrifice for us all.
