Eleanor Crompton was born in Stockport about 1871; in 1892 she married Richard Whitehall a brewer and victualler from Coedpoeth.
They were living on Smithfield Road for many years and very close to the pub.
In 1911 they had 4 children at home, Harry Havelock 16, Norman Russell 13, George White 11 and Elsie Meyers who was 8. Their eldest son James Bertram wasn`t at home.
In 1918 their son James Bertram was a Company Sergeant Major with the 820th Mechanized Transport Company, Army Service Corps. He died aged 26 on 11 November 1918 at Tirnova, near Nish, and was buried in Chela Kula Military Cemetery, Serbia.
Chela Kula Military Cemetery is located in the city of Nis on Francuska Street. The British plot contains the graves of 26 soldiers from the United Kingdom, seven Red Cross nurses, three sailors of the Royal Navy and three unidentified Marines. Of the 26 soldiers, 25 belonged to the R.A.S.C. (M.T.) and died of influenza after the Armistice with Bulgaria. Of the nurses, five belonged to the Scottish Women’s Hospital.
The War Graves Commision has his details as –
Son of Richard and Eleanor Whitehall, of Bourne House, Smithfield Rd, Wrexham, Denbighshire. Age: 26.
What isn`t mentioned is that James Bertram Whitehall had married in Dublin in 1914. His bride was Elizabeth Valentine Richardson. In the record of Soldiers effects, on 21 June 1920 the sum of £6 6s was authorized to be paid to the widow of soldier Elizabeth V O`Neill, so she had obviously remarried . In the summer of 1919 an Elizabeth V Whitehall had married Charles Neal in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Also buried with Eleanor is her husband Richard Whitehall who was buried on 28 July 1947 aged 82. He was still living on Smithfield Road.
