Bob the Bellman, Johnstown
This 1932 picture is of Bob the Bellman – real name Sam Jones who’s family nickname was Dinah.
He was the bellman for Ponciau and Johnstown in the nineteen thirties. He would tour the villages and stand on the street corners with his loud bell shouting the local news. He would also shout out in his loud voice and read the local advertisements for local shops in Rhos and Johnstown.
He would shout out that men’s shirts were on sale at Gracie’s shop in Rhos for 1/11d and other such like adverts. He would also announce the films showing that week at the Palace and Pavillion cinemas in Rhos.
