Alexander George Davies was born in 1860 in Wrexham, he was the son of Edward Davies and Elizabeth Williams, his father was a joiner from Birkenhead and his mother was from Hanmer.
In 1861 the family were in Eagle Street, Wrexham, Alexander George was the youngest of 7 children at home, by 1871 his father had died and they had moved to 6 Chester Street. William Robert 22 was a hairdresser, and Thomas 17 was his apprentice.
In 1881 only Joseph 23 and George (Alexander) 21 were at home with Elizabeth, and they were also hairdressers. Alexander George was sometimes using the name George as his first name.
In 1885 George married Eliza Thadwald who was from Ilfrecombe. The event was reported in the Wrexham Advertiser.
DAVIES—THADWALD—May 4, by licence, at the Congregational chapel, Ruabon, by the Rev. D. J. Benyon, Ruabon, in the presence of Mr J. Denbigh Jones, registrar, G. A. Davies, Chester-street, Wrexham, to E. Thadwald, Talbot-road, Hirdir, Wrexham.
By 1891 they were in 16 Trevor Street and had two children Edith Elizabeth aged 5 and Alexander George who was 3. George Alexander was still a hairdresser, with his shop in Henblas Street.
In October that year there was a court case held in Wrexham.
THEFT OF PIPES. I Joseph Smith and Thomas Follis, privates in the R.W.F., were in custody charged on remand with stealing four wooden pipes. valued 2s, the property of Mr George Davies, hairdresser and tobacconist, 10, Henblas-street, on Monday night.—Mr Tom Smith, assistant to Mr Davies, said the prisoners came to the shop on Monday night, and asked to be shown some pipes. Six wooden ones were put before them. They took two each and left the shop. The men declined to give them up. On the following day the men were identified at the barracks, with the pipes in their possession.—Smith, who said he had been in the army three weeks and Follis five, were reported by Lieut. Maddocks to have good characters.—The prisoners, who pleaded guilty, were ordered to be detained in custody until the rising of the court, in consideration of their having been locked up since Tuesday.
George Alexander died 21 August 1896, aged 33 at 19 Talbot Road.
It`s a bit of a mystery as to what Eliza did next.
In 1901 living in 15 Chester Street, was James Grant 32 who was a veterinary surgeon, he was from Rothsay, Scotland. His wife is Eliza, aged 34 and he has 2 stepchildren, Edith Davies 15 and George Davies 13. (No marriage has been found) Neither James Grant or Eliza have turned up after 1901, but in 1904 Alexander George joined the Navy, and served until 1921.
